Aragonite

Aragonite has the same chemistry as Calcite but has a different crystal structure (i.e. fibrous and rounded).

Aragonite was discovered in Aragon, Spain in 1790. It was from the site of its first discovery Aragonite gets its name.

Prismatic twinning (i.e. one crystal growing within another) is a common feature in Aragonite. If three twins occur the mineral becomes pseudo-hexagonal.

Aragonite is a constituent of many sea creatures' shell structures; a curious development since Calcite is the more stable form of calcium carbonate. The iridescent colors (i.e. Mother of Pearl luster) in sea shells such as Abalone are made possible by several tiny layers of Aragonite.
Aragonite occurs as a deposit from hot springs and in association with beds of gypsum.

Aragonite makes for an interesting, delicate and attractive rare gemstone. It comes in an array of soft pretty colors including yellow, white, grey and colorless.

Aragonite is found in Spain, France, UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Namibia, Poland and U.S.A.
