Howlite

Howlite is a snow-white opaque gem with dispersed grey, black or dark-brown veins.

This versatile gem was named after Henry How, a 19th Century mineralogist, who discovered it in Nova Scotia.

Also know as the “Tranquility Stone”, Howlite is believed by some to help with memory retention and the desire for knowledge.

Some natural healers believe its calcium carbonate composition gives it an affinity for the skeletal structure and use it to aid in balancing calcium levels in teeth and bones.

Some crystals healers believe Howlite decreases an overly critical state of mind, selfishness, stress, pain and rudeness by promoting inner strength and decency within ones character. It is also believed by some to heighten creativity by bringing new ideas into clear focus and inspiring action.

Some people also use Howlite to help get a restful sleep and to assist in recalling dreams.

It is a mineral classified in the monoclinic crystal system and although not common, it is relatively inexpensive.

Because it is porous, Howlite can be easily dyed and it has been used to imitate other gems such as Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. This is a shame because Howlite is such a gorgeous gemstone in its own right and with new finds in China increasing its availability; Howlite is increasingly being used as cabochons in Jewelry.

It is found in Canada (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick), U.S.A. (California) and China.
